Teacher Learning Communities

Teachers love TLCs! We continue to get rave reviews from our teacher participants. For example, 5th-grade teacher Karen Bergum from West Grand Elementary who was a participant in the Fall 2017 Increasing Student Ownership of Learning TLC said, “I liked seeing results from the changes that I made in my classroom. I liked seeing changes in how my students approached and thought about their learning." On average, our participants give the TLCs a 4.4 out of 5 when asked how much the TLCs help them to grow professionally.

Thirty-seven participants are currently enrolled in Spring 2018 TLCs:
  • Students as Partners in Creating a Positive Classroom Environment,
  • Using Developmental and Cognitive Sciences to Enhance Instruction, and
  • Connecting Key Ideas Across Content Areas.
Teacher participants work on a "brain architecture" activity at the kick-off day for Using Developmental and Cognitive Sciences to Enhance Classroom Instruction.
What is a TLC? A Teacher Learning Community (TLC) is a semester-long course designed by the SEED Team that gives teachers the opportunity to collaborate with peers across the region, engage in new learning about one element of the Colorado teacher quality standards, and receive individualized support to implement new ideas in the classroom.Read more here.

SEED PAK & SEED Facilitators

Use of the SEED PAK (our online resource library) is increasing! Each school now has a teacher leader who is designated as a "SEED Facilitator." Many of these Facilitators are leading groups of teachers to use the SEED PAK for professional learning conversations within their buildings. The SEED PAK allows teachers to review resources (such as videos, webinars, and articles) then complete reflection questions to earn recertification hours. The hard work of our Facilitators has increased the use of this valuable tool significantly.

As SEED Facilitators, teachers have a unique opportunity to learn together and build leadership and facilitation skills. Each of the twenty-three facilitators has taken on a leadership project in their building. These projects include mini-courses built around SEED PAK resources on phonology, mathematical mindsets, school culture, and others.

What is the SEED PAK? The SEED PAK is our online library of "Personalized Accessible Knowledge." This library is a catalog of publicly-available online resources that are organized by the Colorado Teacher Quality Standards. Teachers can review these resources and complete reflection questions to earn recertification hours. Learn more here.

Learning Forward Conference Presentation

The SEED team's winter highlight was the opportunity to attend the Learning Forward Annual Conference in Orlando! We were thrilled to see presentations from education superstars including Micheal Fullan, Andy Hargreaves, Tom Guskey, Jim Knight and Joellen Killion. In addition, there were many other wonderful sessions led by professional learning experts from around the world. We came home feeling inspired to improve and innovate.

Our team, along with a panel of 3 teacher participants, presented a session called “Taking Professional Learning From Ideas to Action.” We shared strategies for planning professional development that helps educators implement their new learning. We focused on the importance of outcome-based planning, personalized coaching, reflection, classroom implementation, and choice in helping teachers use what they have learned in their classrooms. Click here to see a recent blog post about the Learning Forward conference and standards.
